Elizabeth wants to see her, so she walks there, making her way through the dirt and mud of the fields. Jane develops a cold as a result of the wet and cold, and she ends up spending the night at Netherfield. Bennet knows that it will rain and decides that Jane should ride there in the rain so that she will likely be asked to stay overnight at Netherfield Park with the Bingleys. The Bennets are talking about the soldiers over dinner one night when Jane receives a note inviting her to Netherfield Park. They also spend a great deal of time excitedly chatting about the militia that is stationed in that town. Lydia and Catherine (who goes by the nickname of Kitty) pass their time by visiting Mrs. Bennet’s death, it must pass to a male heir and not a female. We learn that the Bennet estate is entailed. Soon after this, Darcy tells Miss Bingley that he admires Elizabeth. Elizabeth, true to what she declared earlier in the novel, refuses. At Lucas Lodge, the Lucas family home, Sir William tries to persuade Elizabeth to dance with Darcy. To her great surprise, he starts listening to what she says at parties. Charlotte asserts that this is unwise, and that it might be better for one not to know too much about her future husband’s faults.ĭarcy begins to realize that he is attracted to Elizabeth. While Elizabeth says that it is preferable for a young woman to give herself time until she is certain of her own feelings. Charlotte Lucas declares that if Jane hides the fact that she likes Bingley too well, the gentleman might lose interest. Bingley’s attentiveness to Jane continues, and Elizabeth thinks that she is “in a way to be very much in love” with him, although she is concealing it very well. The Bennets and Bingley’s sisters exchange visits.
Everyone thinks that Darcy is too proud to like, even though he is rich and is from a prestigious family. Darcy, and Elizabeth stoutly declares that will never dance with him. They concur that while it’s true that Bingley asked Charlotte to dance first, he thought Jane was the prettiest there. The women of the Bennet and Lucas families discuss the ball the morning after. Charlotte is the eldest of the Lucas children, and she is Elizabeth’s closest friend.
Sir William Lucas, his wife, and their children are among the Bennets’ neighbors and friends.
